The fibres of a synthetic carpet become damaged when walked upon, so that they trap dirt more easily. Remove the dirt and fills up the gaps in the fibre surface with a dirt-repellent layer. Woolen carpets have more or less the same problem, as the natural wool grease gradually disappears. HG carpet and upholstery cleaner replenishes it with a dirt-repellent material.
